After I burn a CD or DVD, Disk Copy automatically verifies the burn. I wouldn't mind so much, but it takes FOREVER for it to verify a DVD. is it safe to turn this off? i mean if the DVD works, its verified enough, right?

Well, Disc Copy is the only program that I've ever seen do it, so there is a decent chance that you could turn it off.

At the same time, though, the only program that I've never had a problem burning a disc with has been Disc Copy.

As long as the DVD works, I'd say you're ok, at the risk of finding out later that there may be something wrong with it.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.

You might change your mind when you have a crucial file be unreadable. The thing is that a bad DVD-R burn won't be completely unreadable -- it's more likely that a small section will be unreadable, but that's enough to cause some huge problems. Even though the vast majority of my burns are fine, I always verify because I have run into bad burns more often than I am comfortable with, even with Apple media, and otherwise you have no way of telling until you discover that a file or video is unreadable.

ok, so the whole point is so i know if there is a problem with the disk. i mean, if there is a problem, there would be nothing i could do about it anyway, other than toss the DVD and burn again. it can't fix anything.

Yes, the point is so that you can make another copy of the disc. If you don't do it and find out later that that burn was bad, you may have already deleted the original files, and it's obviously especially bad if you are relying on the DVD-R for backups of crucial files.

Just yesterday, when backing up all my mail in entourage (actually the whole database of Entourage), the verification failed. Now, I have some problems with my HD (overlapped extant allocations) and am trying desperately to get hold of DiskWarrior to try to fix it. I tossed out a cache file and the second backup worked just fine. I always do verification -- have had only a couple fail, but if it does, then crucial info may be missing/corrupted/whatever.

By the way, has anyone else ever had overlapped extant allocations? Never heard of them until two nights ago. Disk Utility is not working...

Yup, I've had 'em. DiskWarrior will fix 'em.
