My OS X problems persist.

1. My machine freezes up completely when I try to access certain folders (especially those with a large number of items in them). There are certain folders I look in only as a last resort. There would appear to be no disk corruption issues.

2. The other day almost all my OS X programs crashed on me, in a cascade. although strangely not Classic. I took a screen shot... quite amusing really, but since then....

3. Classic refuses to boot! I have 3 different Classic installations on 3 differennt drives. 9.1, 9.2 and 9.2.1 None of them will launch, all give this error:

An error was encountered while attempting to update your system folder with Classic-specific resources. [Quit]

The only other thing I've done is replace the original Radeon with a Radeon 9000...

Apart from that, OS X chugs along quite nicely, and i really love my G4 533/DP - DP all the way...:-) But I wish I could get to the bottom of these little problems.

Have you tried all the usual supects, e.g. fsck, repairing disk permissions, update prebinding, etc.?

What system version are you running?

Also, I was under the impression that 9.2.2 was the best version to run for Classic compatibility with Jaguar (but not for any other reason...)

Sounds very much like a memory error, especially the crashlog.

I'm not convinced that it is. I mean it happens when I access certain folders in certain locations, which would make me think of disk media corruption, or file system problems, but none of these are reported either by fsck or booting into 9 and running Norton....

Have you run the Hardware test cd that came with the computer? Have you reinstalled the OS to eliminate the OS as a culprit?

I will run the Hardware Test. Not convinced of its usefulness.

Re-installing the OS is a major hassle, and an absolute last resort. IMHO it takes at least a day to get 95% of everything back, and there will still be some app screaming for authorization, or a lost serial number....

I wonder if anyone could look at my kexts and point a finger...?

I've had the "all applications die in a row" thing happen to me a couple of times. You don't know whether to laugh or cry as each message proclaims "the system and other applications are unaffected."

May be entirely unrelated, but you don't seem to have a driver installed for the Radeon 9000. If so, it could be the memory problem is coming from VRAM, not RAM.

I noticed that too - although I did run the ATI 9000 installer....

But these problems started before the arrival of that card.

I will run the installer again...

Update: I don't think there are specific Radeon 9000 drivers - it appears to use the 8500 ones, and they would seem to be installed.

Correct me if I'm wrong....

Me too, but it happened out of the blue (well, it seems to me that way) and it doesn't occur everyday, maybe three times a year or so. But yes, it's an example that feedback to the user in a text format can be quite silly.
In OS 9 I once had the error [ "No error" OK ]

I've just frozen, trying to open a folder. (Spinning beachball)

The Dock has frozen with one item's icon in a magnified state. Spinning beachball on mouseover.

I can't use any part of any app that might need to access the file-system, i.e. I can't navigate or Load/Save.

All I can do is switch between currently open app's (except Finder wondows) by clicking on a window belonging to that app. Command Tab doesn't work.

I'm sure if the Terminal had already been running I would have been able to switch to it and use it... would I have been able to discover anything about the state of my machine, and what has happened to cause this problem?

See my post on "beach balls and the Finder".

Do you have any Firewire drives by chance?

I have a FireWire CD writer. Last time The Freeze happened, unplugging this didn't have any affect.

But thanks for trying

I think all that's left is to re-install the System. Something I'm not too happy about having to do.

One last shot. I would like to remove everything from the System that is non-standard, i.e. any 3rd party drivers (my logitech mouse) and any haxies that may hack into the system in a potentially problem-causing way.

So thius means going through kexts in System/Library.

Are there any other places system hacks and extensions might reside (or hide)?

I don't have Diskwarrior, but Norton (when booted in 9 - the X version causes more harm than good) reports nothing unusual amiss.
