same problem here, tried it on 2 powermacs and it worked fine, but then on an iBook - now the iBook can't login.
Is there any way to log in without a password or possibly as root with a root password?
Only 1 user is set up on that machine and i don't have an option to log in as anyone else.

Try this. It worked for me.
Startup in single user mode (hold down command-S immediately after restarting).
When the command line appears, type: fsck -y
Press Return
Type: mount -uw /
Press Return
Type: chmod 1775 /
Press Return
Type: reboot
Press Return

I found a workaround . Do not hit the log in logo after entering your password, but hit enter(return) on keyboard. Found this on apple discussion site.

I thought that was a new feature, as part of the security update. Ie, don't allow users to log in, as it would be a security risk.
