stupid ?: how do i put a pic as either my xterm background or terminal.app background

been fooling with xv, thought somehow it could place a pic in my xterm background... can't get it to work...

I don't think you can. I'm sure there is a terminal that supports it (gnome-terminal or kterm).

Something along the lines of
Code:
xv -root -rmode 5 -quit -max file.jpg &
will set your desktop background. From my knowledge you can't set the background of an xterm (or a Terminal.app window for that matter) to a picture. For that you need to use something like rxvt or aterm I think.

Sounds like something I would do. Read about it, think "that sound cool", spend 3 days trying to do it, get it working, and then realize that it makes the text hard to read, and never use it again!

The Terminal (v1.4) that's included in the Panther preview supports background pictures (and transparency at the same time). It also works on 10.2.

Terminal 1.4 (the one that comes with the Panther preview and supports picture backgrounds) also works under Jaguar...whoo!

Eterm not only does pictures, it comes with a bunch of it's own and will start with a new picture, chosen at random, each time it opens. However, if you want to add your own picture, at least to the random sequence, you have to edit one of it's configuration scripts. Fink will install it but it requires XWindows to run.
