Hi there to all,

This is my setup:

PM G4>AirPort Card>Zip Drive 250
|
Cable Modem>WAN>AirPort BS
|
iBook>AirPort Card

This is my question:

Is it possible to share a Zip disk on my PM G4 and mount it in the iBook's desktop through an afp (Personal File Sharing) connection!?

Anyone please. Thanks in advance.
JM

I've successfully shared a ZIP disk using AFP before, so it should work.

Thanks for your input bradoesch.

Unfortunately, it isn't working for me.

When I command+k (Connect to Server), all I can see listed in 'Connect to Server' window is my PM G4's HD (two partitions OS 9/OS X) but nothing else. No zips

I've also tried to insert a CD-ROM and it perfectly shares it too. This definitely is not working with Zip disks. Am I missing something!? Can anyone please help!?

Thanks in advance,
JM

A trivial question
You do not happen to have the ZIP disk in PC format (FAT32)???

Maybe a silly question, but you did remember to share the ZIP drive?

If so, try doing this in OS 9 and seeing if it'll work. When I did it, I had a Motorola clone computer running 9.1 that was sharing the ZIP drive.

Thanks for asking DrBoar,

Nope. I don't work with PC zip disks, actually they're all MAC formated.

Best,
JM

Hey there Brad,

Thanks for keeping your support.

OS X doesn't let me change permissions for zip disks when I command+I (get info) on them. This is what is stated:

Owner: *user* (Me)
Access: Read & Write
Group: Unknown
Access: Read & Write
Others: Read & Write

I've already tried it booting both machines with OS 9 and it definitely works without a glitch. I can share zip disks in MacOS 9.

Now my question/doubt is... can it be (for sure) done in MacOS X!?

Best,
JM

Sounds like your problem maybe that the disks are formatted as HFS Standard. OS X doesn't allow sharing of these formatted disks through AFP, at least not on my machines. Just copy the files you have currently stored to your HD if you need them and reformat the disk either with Iomega's tools or through the erase disk command in Disk Utility in X or Special in 9. When reformatting, make sure to select HFS+ (plus). And if sharing is allowed on your machine, they should show up when you login over afp. Good luck.

Hi there to all,

csimon2, guess what...

Just a few minutes before reading your precious post, I headed up for a fresh clean format process under Disk Utility in MacOS X, and selected to format one Zip disk as an HFS+ volume. Tried an afp connection then and it worked without a glitch.

So what can I say!?... You hit the red spot!

Thanks to all posters. Cheers,
JM

No problem. Just remember that OS X really doesn't like HFS Standard. If you absolutely have to share a HFS Standard disk, turn on the Remote Login in the Sharing preference panel. You should then be able to SSH into the disk using Terminal or a SSH client such as RBrowser.

Thanks for your hints csimon2,

But I think I prefer to deal with afp mode/protocol. Everything that's Terminal related just gives me the creeps.

Besides, RBrowser's not a free app.

Cheers,
JM
