Hi People,

the most annoying bug in OSX is the preview of Divx-avis in the Finder. Whenever I click on a divx .avi it takes up to 20-30 secs to show me the preview. For that time the Finder is freezed. ARGH.

Even when I MOVE some divx in Column View, the Finder moves the first movies, then (when just 1 is left) it starts calculating the preview.

I know I can stop showing ALL previews. But I use them a lot. Can I prevent the Finder from just showing me .avis? OR SPEED THE SH** UP??

It would be a nice feature to have. I'm not sure how to do it, but I just wanted to comment about the poll. It's kinda confusing.

how about just changing to list view, or icon view, in your Finder window?

i know it's a whole 'one click' away from your normal routine of viewing in column view, but, it might be the revolutionary solution you've been waiting for.

download and install the free divx code and this little problem will disappear. This updated code allows you to view divx files with out the need of converting them. So that means that you can watch PC encoded divx files flawlessly with Quicktime.

Just do the "one click"-method mentioned by Philzilla.

hum hum no, that's not it. I like column view. I DO work-arounds like this but this thread was made up to circumvent work-aorunds in the future.

I guess I have installed certains divx already. The original and ffmpeg stuff aswell. I don't convert Divx movies, I use vlc to watch. Works flawlessly.

So no other ideas?

I forgot to mention the second bug: when I use the Preview in Column View a lot, every now and then I hear the SOUND after pressing play but the picture is not moving. I have to click the triangle twice, then it works again...

There is no longer any need for VLC or Mplayer now that the official DivX code allows you to view these files in QuickTime! that little bug you mention has been squashed trust me divx files will not get stuck when selecting inside of a folder....we all had that problem

huh? I installed it but still get stuck. Maybe I have to delete some of the other codecs? FFMpeg or the like?

edit: it seems, in library/Quicktime I have just the divx codec. Couldn't find ffmpeg. Maybe just too dumb

btw: i like vlc a lot more than QT Player, it is more flexible and user-oriented. But I discussed this already in another thread.

20-30 seconds is nothing. Try installing the Quicktime MPEG2 decoder and then select a large MPEG2 file in column view. It can take several minutes to display! This is seriously annoying. And for some reason this lag will often happen when just trashing files in column view (not previewing them at all). Right now the only fix I know (aside from turning off all previews which makes column view a lot less useful) of is to uninstall the decoder.

What about XviD files and files encoded with Windows Media sound?

did you restart the finder after installing? did you open an (mp3) avi in quicktime to make sure the codec is installed correctly? are you sure you got version 5.0.6?

Hey there, malique, stickyboy here.

Try looking in ~/Library/QuickTime AND /Library /QuickTime.

Have you installed 3ivx? I'm pretty sure if it's installed, it'll take over playing Divx.

3ivx takes over decoding but not file parsing. if you have both installed, divx will prevent the long delay while opening (as well as make mp3 audio actually usable) and 3ivx will decode the video afterwards

WOW- thanks for the tip. I had been to divx.com months ago but didn't realize they had updated the divx codec. That pause from avi previews in the finder was killing me. All fixed here-

thanks

this is actually a-sort-of-bug ...
I use columns, but with preview "closed"
sopposedly, the Finder shouldn't even look at the file to make a preview ... yet it does, so you get the 30 second delay with or without the preview open ...

I have two suggestions
1) go to "View Options ... " and uncheck "Show Preview Column"

2)when you need to open a file, "control-click it" (or right click it for multi button mouse users) whitout having selected the file before, and use open ...

say...here's a fresh new idea: install DivX 5.0.6 and the delay is now only 1 second instead of 30

btw, with your workarounds you still can't select 10 files and move them without the delay

Works quite nicely. Now I no longer cringe when those .avi files show up in column view.

Still takes 10-15 seconds to preview in finder.
