Hi all,

Here's my goal...

I have two Macs networked; an iMac G4 and a G3 desktop. I wish to have the G3 act as the server holding all data, home directories, etc. In addition, I wish to set it so that no matter which machine we log onto it will show our user Home directory, etc. The iMac will have no data on it.

I read in Mac OS X Unleashed that it can be done but it was over my head. Does anyone have any resources or an explanation on how to achieve this?

Thanks,

Ed

Simple answer, Mac OS X Server. That's one of the main features of the Server version. I'm not sure it's possible with client. I'd be interested in learning about it if it can be done.

However, if you don't really care about storing the username and passwords on the server, and just want the home directories, you could set up auto-mounting on your iMac of an AFP volume on your G3, and point the netinfo home directory location on your iMac to /Volumes/iMac-volume/Users/username.

It *should* work so long as the iMac properly auto-mounts the AFP share.

It's possible, but it's a HUGE pain in the arse to do it without Server.

Sounds like a good opportunity for some third party developer!
