Since upgrading to iTunes 4, I plug in my iPod and it mounts, iTunes autosynchs and then unmounts the iPod from the desktop. iSynch does the same, mounts iPod, synchs and then unmounts.

There's no settings I can change to stop iTunes from launching. How can I back up my data now? Is this a bug or feature?

You can set both iSync and iTunes not to auto-sync the iPod. For iTunes, click the iPod icon at the bottom of the window when the iPod is connected. For iSync, click the iPod icon in the iSync window.

Thanks. Silly new options. It used to be so much simpler.

Well actually they've made it simpler now, I think.

If you don't want to use the iPod as a hard drive (that is, you don't use the "Enable Firewire Disk Use" option) it will automatically update/sync and then unmount--and you're on your way.

If you choose to enable the firewire disk mode then it will stay mounted until you click the eject button just like it did in iTunes 3.

As far as I know, it's always been like that.

Yeah, I prefer it the old way because I like to back up my data when I'm travelling without lugging a 120GB LaCie drive around.

I just compared the iPod options between iTunes 3 and iTunes 4 and they're the same. If anything, iTunes 4 only changed the default setting.
