I'm going to be buying a Powerbook sometime this summer (hopefully in early July if upgrades are announced at WWDC, as some expect). With Panther due in the fall, I'll likely want to upgrade, but spending just under $200 (Canadian) doesn't much appeal to me considering I'll have only been using Jaguar for a month or two. I think I read somewhere that Apple will give you a free upgrade if you've only had your new Mac for a short time.

Can anyone tell me what this timeframe is? If I buy a Mac in July, will I be elligible for a free upgrade in, say, September?

Thanks,
Mike

Who knows exactly, but my best guess is that if you buy before Panther is announced you are not eligible for the free update.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Wait till WWDC and find out for yourself.

With past updates, Apple has offered free upgrades to those who had recently purchased a system (I think it was within 2 or 3 months). So if you get a PowerBook in July, you *SHOULD* be eligible for a free upgrade, assuming Panther comes out in September.

That's interesting because I could have sworn it was only for people who bought a mac on the day of the release, I could be wrong.

if i recall correctly (and it is a bit hazy....), i think the "free" (pay for s+H only) upgrades were for those purchased after the official announcement of the shipping date.

(and y2kerr, please check before making new threads....we had one just like this a couple days ago and it was already the 3rd or 4th....we sure don't need yet another....)

Yes, buy a mac after panther is announced next week and you will (most likely) get it free when it ships (by mail).
