I just did a clean install of OS X on a Pismo w/only a 10 GB HD. I know I need a bigger HD (for music alone), but in the meantime, what can I safely get rid of?

I totally spaced on the custom install (and doing it again is not an option). I didn't uncheck the option to install all the other language fonts & files... So even though I only speak English and a spit of French, I have Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and a bunch of other language sets installed.

Exactly what folders should I look for in getting rid of these? Same with printer drivers. I only use my Canon i850. Which folders should I look for to get rid of unused drivers?

Thx.

try DeLocalizer:

this works really well, and can save you a few hundred megabytes.

/Library/Printers contains all the printer drivers. Delete whatever folders you don't need to save some space. They're on the OSX install CD if you realize you need any of them again.

You also could take some utilities, apps and folders that you do not use often and compress them into tarballs or gzips. Saves a lot of space and they expand very quickly. Tar and Gzip preserve permissions and do things in a "*nixy" way so there would not be problems that may occur with stuffing.

There are some freeware drag and drop apps around or it takes maybe 10 minutes at the most to become very quick with the CLI in Terminal.

Different approach, but can do what you want it to.

In my \Library\Printers folder were some folders for different manufacturers. Canon, Epson, Lexmark and the like. I need the Canon one for my i850. I deleted the others.

There were two I wasn't sure of though. They're labeled PPDs and PPD Resources, or somethin' (I'm @ work now). Are those deletable?

Anyone know anything about those language files?

/Library/Desktop Pictures
Don't delete that, as it contains the background for the login screen (I don't know what side effects occur if you delete it).

Go through ~/Library/Preferences and delete the preference files of any apps you don't use any more.

Go through ~/Library/Application Support and delete the folders of any app you don't use.

Delete any applications you don't use. Go through your Home folder (Documents, Pictures, etc.) and delete old files you don't need anymore.

Since you did a clean install, delete the /Previous Systems/Previous System 1 folder (assuming you chose to save user and network preferences).

On the login screen, you'll have the same plain blue background as you get during the startup process instead of the Aqua picture.
