Hi,
after a .6 upgrade reboot on a PB 667, I have a number of problems that I think can be diagnosed from this error I saw in the Console:
"System Preferences[370] Couldn't open system configuration database."

After the upgrade, all my Locations were missing, the battery and airport status icons are not in the menu bar (even when i check off for them to appear from system preferences), Sharing section of system prefs doesn't load (just stays on "Loading Sharing...", and I have no network connection with dhcp ethernet or airport. In the Console, i also saw error messages about loading Airport and battery icons with these errors:
SystemUIServer[361] ICNInitialize failed: -536870212
SystemUIServer[361] failed to load Menu Extra: NSBundle </System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/AirPort.menu> (loaded)
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contets/MacOS/SystemUIServer: AirPort Menu Extra: SCDynamicStoreCreate() failed: unknown error code
-- and something similar with the Battery status.

When i attempt to add a location and set tcp/ip on ethernet and airport to DHCP i actually don't see the DHCP option at all, and after adding a location and erasing it, and then rebooting, the location is still there.

has anyone seen this? what does a "couldn't open system configuration database" mean? i'll need a few days to back up 30 gigs of data--but is there any other way around reinstalling, something I was so proud of not needing to do with OS X.

Someone else has seen this. It is mentioned in another thread, I read it this morning. Same exact circumstances.
I just found it. No wonder it was the same, it was you !

I think this sounds like a permission issue. Try running the fix permissions utility or alternately enter "sudo chmod 644 /var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml" in the command line. Personally I'd try the command line first but its up to you.

Hi iJed, this was a good idea, but preferences.xml was already 644, and is owned by root. I wasn't asked for the root password when I was modifying network settings (that weren't saved and after which I saw in the console a message that the preferences could not be modified).

What is the permissions-fixing app? Any other ideas? Anything will help at this point...

When I checked the Console, i saw the error:

System Preferences[464] Error: Configuration monitor failed to connect to configd server

then, i tried "sudo configd" and got this:
*** configd (daemon) failed to start, received signal=10

I checked the crash report in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/configd.crash.log and saw this:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0xf0081000

any ideas?
