I have a 30gig drive on my 600 iBook and I need just a bit more space. Not to mention that I find that there seems to be so many things wrong when I boot up in 9 (e.g. sherlock won't work, etc). Since I rarely use 9, I was thinking about taking it off my drive alltogether. I use Classic mode for Photoshop and a few other programs, but I almost never need to start up from 9.

Have other people dumped 9 from their machines? If so, what are the good/bad experiences about it?

Also, how exactly can I get rid of it?

If you still use Classic for a few apps, then don't delete OS 9. Classic uses the OS 9 folder.

Yeah, if you want to use Classic, then you cannot delete the OS 9 system!

However, if you do want to delete the OS 9 system (including Classic's ability to use it), just drag the "System Folder" folder from the root of the file system to the Trash (do NOT drage the "System" folder to the trash!) and also drag any OS 9-only applications to the trash (eg, your entire "Applications (Mac OS 9)" folder.

Very simple.

Once you're ready to delete OS9 I recommend a clean install of X. Gets rid of accumulated junk and rubbish. If you want to gain some more diskspace a good utility is Omni DiskSweeper.

i've never had nine, and i don't miss it, though i've got pshop in x, which you will need.

but if you're worried, it's no problem.
and the disk space (why i originally did it, i'm on a 12 gig pismo) was WELL worth it.

I have to say that after two years of full time osx i still have os9 on a partition.
However, I haven't used it for at least 9 months i think. Up to then there were still some small 9 applications I had to use and I used it for playing Q3A which was considerably faster on OS9 with my particular setup.

Applications are all OSX now, and I don't play that much Q3A anymore. If i do, I do it on my PC server which has a better graphics card.
So I have been thinking the past week actually about removing it and joining the partition to one of my other partitions.

Thank you to everyone for their input. I still use Photoshop 5.5 in Classic mode and don't have the cash for an upgrade yet, so I think I'll keep OS9 a little while longer. But as soon as I can afford it, I will get photoshop for X and then say good bye to OS9 forever.

Thanks again everyone!
