Is there any way to disable the feature that the finder shows you the icons of the content in dock-folders? For example, when I click my "Applications" folder in the dock, I see all the pretty icons, but this takes quite some on my iBook. Generic icons would to the job for me, in this particular case.

Sorry, no way that I know of. But creating a folder of aliases -- instead of scrolling through the apps themselves -- does seem to increase the speed of pop-up menus in the Dock.

Try using FruitMenu. You can't alter the Dock, but you can put folders/items in the Apple menu or in contextual menus. Plus, there is an option to turn off icons.
