hey,
how big are the hard drives you guys are using? i'm going to buy a new 12" powerbook, and i'm not sure it's worth the extra 50 bucks for another 20 gb. I mean, seriously, how much space do you use for the OS and apps. because i won't need more than 10-15gb for mp3's - and games i don't play.(but if i did install a game - i wouldn't need more than 5gb. so all thats left is some space for misc download files and apps and stuff. how much do you guys use for that kind of thing? i'm not gonna need more than 20gb for that will i? btw, i also don't need to store gigs of divx on my machine either. and i was also thinking i could hook up an external drive if i ever really needed some storage space. (like an ipod)

Its pretty much like eating bread, the more you eat the more you buy. It really depends on your needs.

Believe me, upgrade to the 20 GB. You might be paying $50 bucks now, but you eat up space faster than you think.

If you are going to use 10-15 GB for MP3s, that right there gives you reason for a 20 GB drive - plus you said an extra 5 GB for misc. stuff.

Go with the 20 GB. I chose to upgrade my TiBook 400 to a 20GB drive (instead of getting more RAM) - and now I have 2.3GB left, and got an external LaCIE drive.

$50 for 20 more GB in a laptop? Yeah, that's worth it.

Get as much internal storage as you can - it makes the best long term sense. Apps these days are getting bigger and bigger -

No question. Get the extra 20G

The time and hassle it will take to copy your data to a new drive and swap out the base drive when you run out of room is going to cost way more than the $50 you'll spend now.

yea,
you guys are right. i posted this question because i was unsure of myself. i thought that with today's hard drives easily in the 80 - 120gb range, 40gb seems so small. but you are right, the 20gb extra will make my laptop more future proof, and i'll be better off in the end. thanks for helping me!

I'd go big. When I bought a 120 GB drive for my iMac, I thought I've had no need for my existing 40 GB FireWire drive. Well, with 4 GB free the FW drive is looking good again.

Only $50 for an extra 20 GB? Definitely worth it.

Don't forget that the actual usable GB space is less than specified. And you'll probably get the extra $50 back when you sell it.

I've never regretted having extra drive space, but have often regretted not having enough.
