Recently my machine has begun to display a strange symptom: in certain applications, if I right-click on something, it kills the application. This happens if I click on a filename or on the background in the Finder, or in Internet Explorer (including the new one that just came out). In other apps, however (e.g., Mail.app and Safari), right clicks work as they should.

What's up? The CrashReporter log for a recent finder crash of this sort is attached.

Do you have a 3rd party mouse driver, such as what Microsoft supplies? How about a Macro kit like Quickkeys or iKey. Any of those may be corrupted and intercepting the clicks. Try reinstalling those.

What apps do you have in the "other" bin in your System Preferences pane? I had one (can't remember the name of the app) that caused the exact same problem.

Yeah, the Ape is, but you'll see that in *every* application's stack trace.

This is how Ape works, you see.

But just because you see it in the list doesn't mean it's causing the problem. This has been covered numerous times at www.unsanity.org.

I did have the Kensington Mouseworks driver installed, but that isn't the problem. I tried re-installing, and then completely uninstalled it, but right mouse clicks still kill the Finder or IE (and not Mail.app or Safari).

Do you have something in Library/Contextual Menu Items or ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items ?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Nothing about it at the above site. However, www.unsanity.com has a bunch of information on the subject.

FWIW, I've had a ton of kernal panics and I've traced them to two items, PocketMac and Unsanity's APE. I know unsanity says there application enhancer causes no issues, but when it's running on my system I get hangs and panics. I remove it and they go away. It may not be a problem between OS X and Unsanity's APE, but there is an issue with APE and something

This is the answer (no APEs involved, which I'm just as happy about, since I just finished writing a book that is largely about apes...).

I tried out an App called "JimZIP" but decided it didn't do anything useful for me, so I deleted it. It had (unbeknownst to me) installed a plugin in ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items, and as soon as I removed that, the problem went away. I presume the plugin was calling the App, and since I'd deleted it, producing a crash.

There are morals here, for both users and developers...
