HFS Extended (aka "HFS+") is the file system Mac OS (X) runs on. Unless you installed OS X on a UFS volume (which practically nobody does) you already have that, so I don't know what Virtual PC is complaining about.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Unless he has a volume formated as HFS.

Many disks come from the manufacturer formatted as HFS. You definitely want to reformat it as HFS+ (also known as MacOS Extended).

Use Disk Utility to reformat if that's the case.

You can't run OS X from a HFS volume, it doesn't do UNIX permissions properly.

No, but you could mount a secondary HFS volume. I know - I did it by mistake.
