Reads webpage more carefully Well, only a trial version is free. However, Pooch will make life more convenient. It will not be essential.

I want to use it for Maya.... esp since my PowerBook only has like 16MB of VRAM.

Well, in that case, reading Maya's documentation, to see if it can do distributed rendering, would probably be a good starting point.
