I couldn't find this problem when searching the forum which I find hard to believe, someone else must have seen it so I am very sorry if this is a double post... my search skill have failed me tonight. Anyway, I installed all the fabulous new safari and ichat software and the like today, restarted and everything was going fine for many many hours when suddenly out of seemingly nowhere my computer pops up a very os x looking window that says "you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press restart button" then repeated it in several languages and showed 00:03:93:B9:5c:34 and my ip address . What did I do wrong?

That was a kernal panic.
As long as it doesn't happen again, it
should be fine.

Your operating system just crashed. Perhaps related to the new software, perhaps not.

I also had OS X crash on me today. However, it didn't officially panic. I imagine it's the beta software that we all installed.
You know... iChat AV...

at least 5 times, last night. spinning beach ball. i just had to foce quit, each time. sometimes it would just do that straight away. annoying. and they expect us to (eventually) pay for this? they'd better get those bugs squashed, pronto.

so was there any thing i could have done? Could I have connected from another computer and tried to fix it somehow? I know Kernel panics are pretty bad news but I thought it was pretty hard to take down a unix system

No there is nothing you could have done. The kernel is the very core component of a unix operating system. When the kernel crashes (kernel panic), every other part of the operating system stops working too. So no remote login, nothing. All you can do is restart, and check the crash log to see what it was that caused it (if you're interested).

b00tang,
This happens when you are surfing w/ Safari for long periods and loading large amounts data. There is an issue with the cache getting too large and "ignoring" ram allocations and overflowing the system to where it simply crashes.
Oh, and one more thing.... This is especially true when loading/viewing large amounts of porn for those several hours that you talked about (just admit it, Apple knows this, why did they include a "reset Safari" function if they didn't?
