I have an 802.11b network with WEP setup for part of my home network. I also have a 17" powerbook. Everytime I reboot, the network is forgotten, and is never "in range" even if I'm sitting on top of the access point. I have to manually specify the network name, and then type in the 28-bit hex number in order to get on the network. Needless to say, this is a HUGE pain in the behind, and is seriously at odds with the typical ease of use that Mac is famous for. This can't be right.

Has anyone else had that problem? How come it doesn't just remember my network and key and automatically sign on when I'm in range?

Thanks!
Andy

I have a 17" wideBook - and I used to have an old Graphite ABS.

I noticed that I often could not connect to my network - it would claim that I had the password wrong - It often took three times to allow me onto the network.

This was solved when I updated to an APExtreme Base.

I use WEP Key Maker.

You type in a phrase, it spits out a WEP key that you can copy and paste into the appropriate dialog. Works well as a means for avoiding typing the hex value on the rare occasions it's needed.

I'm not sure why you need to re-enter that every time you reboot though; I sure don't. Are you sure you have your Airport prefs (in Network Prefs) set to "join a specific network" after restart or wake from sleep? The network name and password should be in there, so you don't have to do anything manually each time.
