Today I upgraded one of the eMacs in the lab (1st gen, 1G RAM, OS X 10.2.6) and now some icons are missing. Drag and drop ceased working as well. I tried to repair permissions, empty the cache in /Library/Caches, repair with DiskWarrior, even replacing the coreservicesd file with a fresh copy from another system (coreservicesd also ceased working).
1. I updated 9 items from Software Update while logged in as a non-admin, using the admin name and password when prompted. The 9 items included: QuickTime 6.3, iMovie, iSync, AirPort, Safari 1.0, Security Update 6/9, iPod, Bluetooth, and iTunes 4.01.
2. Upon reboot, the computer will remain on the gray screen with the apple logo and sundial for a VERY long time. Apparently the Cmd-S or Cmd-V key strokes don't work on this computer.
3. The Mac OS X loading screen does NOT appear. Instead, it jumps straight to the login screen.
4. I can no longer mount disk images or other drives from over the network.
Reinstalling from 10.2 is my last ditch option, but I really want to try to avoid it as it is a pain to reinstall Jaguar and then apply the updates one by one.
Anyone have any ideas?
I updated two other computers with the same items in SU...only difference is that on those I was logged in as the admin. Now if it is true that updating system-level stuff while logged in as a non-admin but using an admin name and pw will hose your system........I thought this wasn't supposed to happen?
