I called Apple this morning to enquire about ordering a G5, as I noticed on the 'info' page it says that it will ship with a modified version of Jaguar... (Smaegol 10.2.7?)
If this is the case, I'm waiting until 10.3 is loaded as standard, be it next year or this, before I buy.
I asked the Salesperson if I would get a voucher for 10.3, and she insisted that the G5 will ship with Panther as standard... I didn't believe her, so at my request she asked her manager, and they swore blind it will ship with 10.3 as well...
I still don't believe them, unless they are offering a free upgrade voucher or something, and are using a play on words...
Anyone else heard anything about the G5/Panther situation...

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard that the G5 would come with 10.2.7 and they would give you a voucher for Panther...

Actually, both of you could be right. Initially, the G5 was supposed to ship with a modified version of 10.2. However, Jobs was very non-commital as far as any Panther ship dates. My guess is because they probably aren't sure themselves when it will ship, only that it will be sometime this year.
They probably have it almost done, and are simply nailing down the last bugs and performance boosts, leaving the very real possibility that it could come preloaded.
Just my 2 cents.

It says in the G5 tech papers it shippes with 10.2.7.
No way in hell will 10.3 be done by the time they ship the G5's.

That's what I thought, but the Applestore Uk people were adamant that it would...
I think they must have been mixed up with the voucher situation...

I got an Apple email this morning talking about the G5. To quote:
"And because Mac OS X Jaguar has been specially tuned for the PowerPC G5 processor to provide a seamless transition to 64-bit power, your favorite applicationsfrom Quake to Photoshoprun faster too."
They specifically say Jaguar.. not Panther.

if it were going to ship w/ the g5's then it would pretty much have to go gold master any day now to get it ready for prime time.
seeing as they're just handing out dev. previews, i don't think that will be the case. i think 10.3 is a ways away still - maybe sept, oct. or something along those lines. i'm sure you'll get a free copy of panther w/ any g5 you purchase, though.

Apple phone salespeople never know what they are talking about. I had an Apple phone salesman swear up and down to me that the Formac Studio would carry timecode and deck control from our Betacam SP deck. I knew he was completely wrong, so I asked him again, twice. He was very, very sure of himself.
I think they are just trained to say "yes" to whatever you ask them. Does the New Powermac G5 have time-traveling capabilities? "Yes! Absolutely! It's a new feature in Panther, which is included with the G5's!"
