Where is all my disk space going?

I'm running os 10.2.5 (.6 caused problems so I went back to .5) and have 1.6 gig of free space on the ibook for the os "move about" in.

apart from internet cache & email (I only get about 30 per week) all other files are saved to an external firewire HD.

So you can imagine my surprise when I get error messages telling me the disk is nearly full - close some apps and that my prefs vanish.

Icheck space on the drive and I usually have between 90 - 40mb free. I've tried running mac janitor, logging out but nothing gets it back.

The only solution I have found is to restart. Disk space is back to normal and all is well then for another 2 -3 days before it happens again.

Any ideas?

1.6 gig? You need a lot more room than that for swap files!

Depends on your RAM size, HD size and how much you are running at once. If you are running low on space it indicates that you have too little. Have you partitioned your HD?

I actually have 2.68 gig free after a reboot and not included in that I have a 702mb partition on the same disk.

I had to reboot as the system deleted my prefs which alerted me to check the disk size - about 100mb free.

It seems os isn't cleaning up after itself but I don't know how to fix this bar rebooting which I hardly do as the machine is acting as a server.

specs for the mac are in my sig.

I've been using os X for nearly a year problem free. I haven't installed anything new so I am totally confused by this. The only thing I am doing different is using my mac at night rather than in the day.
The majority of files saved are saved to my external FW drive though

Especially with 320mb RAM, you'll be hitting swap very frequently. Have you run top to see how much you are paging out?

When your hard drive space is low, open up Termina.app, and type in 'top' (sans quotes of course). 6 lines down from the top, there will be a reading:

0(0) pageouts

If either of those numbers is above zero, that means you are writing memory to hard drive space.

I did that thanks. The number shoots up when opening apps but generally stays at 0 but sometimes hits 1 or 2 when I have alot open.

My uptime now stands at 17 hours and disk apace remains more or less the same. I will be keeping my eyes peeled over the next few days (it usually goes pear shapped ever 4 days)
