I've never partitioned my HDs when installing OS's but I was keen on trying it. What are the general recommendations for drive partitioning?

Should the OS be on a partition on its own (5GB, say), or should the apps be on the same partition as the OS?

i'm partitioning a 120GB drive to install jaguar

thanks

I think the default apps that are installed have to be on the same partition as the System, while others such as games, Office, etc. can be on a separate partition.

I've got my OS installed on one partition, my user's home directories on another, oen for Applications, and then a couple others. I have a "Beige" G3, and had to partition anyway to install OS X, and just made all the partitions on my 30 gig drive equal size.

This set up has worked REALLY well. I re-installed OS X and was able to do a clean install without disturbing most of my applications and none of my user data. Most applications don't care where they are installed, so installing on different partitions isn't an issue.

The only real problem I've consistantly had is with AppleWorks updaters. Although AppleWorks installs and run on my application partition, the updaters have insisted on only updated a copy installed on the boot partition.

thanks - my main motivation is of being able to reinstall the system without disturbing much else, if required. I think will install the OS and its applications on a partition, and all other apps on a second partition, with a third partition for everything else. I also found some info on putting an additional partition to use as a scratch disk for certain apps - is this any use?
