I tried to install de Jaguar 6C48 (the last Dock with Minimize in Place capabilities) into Panther 7A179, just for the sake of trying.
And it didn't work.
It threw these two errors:
root# ./Dock
The "IgnoreForEvents" window property is obsolete. Use CGSSetWindowTags with kCGSIgnoreForEventsTagBit flag instead. Set a break-point on CGSLogMessage to find out where this property is set.
The "IgnoreAlphaForDragging" window property is obsolete. Use CGSSetWindowTags with kCGSIgnoreAlphaForDraggingTagBit flag instead. Set a break-point on CGSLogMessage to find out where this property is set.
The "OpaqueForEvents" window property is obsolete. Use CGSSetWindowTags with kCGSOpaqueForEventsTagBit flag instead. Set a break-point on CGSLogMessage to find out where this property is set.

and

Minimize in Place was a good friend to us all, he was always there when we needed him, always making our time worthier.
MIP, you will be missed

i'm sure this isn't the last we'll be seeing of MIP. windowshadeX's preview version shows promise. i paid for it without even attempting to pirate it first!

I never saw the attraction of MIP. I much prefer Command-H.

I think I'm glad to see MIP go away.... Expose is much better.
I used MIP a few times last summer and my desktop was a mess.
Expose is much more innovative....MIP was just plain cool (not all that usefull)

Maybe it's just me, but I think you'll find that Expose is an evolution of MIP.
MIP appeared in a few pre-release builds of Jaguar as an experimental feature - with some notable flaws such as whether those icons should appear above other windows. Expose solved this problem by having the user trigger this behaviour specifically when wanted, so it doesn't get in the way and become obtrusive. Well, that's my take anyway

Exposé is a feature everyone (well...most people) will wonder how they did without. No joke.
Some excellent uses so far is having a DVD playing in DVD Player and having a video chat with someone in iChat. If windows are overlapping, hit the specified keycombo to show all windows and you've got the DVD window and the video chat window tiled up and you can watch both at the same time.
If you've got lots of porn, you can open up images or movies individually and have them tile up ... oh wait ... scratch that.
But my favorite is having a few webpages open and a iChat and the DVD and being able to switch between them or just tile them up so I can see them all at the same time while I wait for an answer in iChat.

F11 is now known as the pr0n key for those that still live at home. hear someone coming, just hit F11 and you are back at the desktop
