I copied my system with Carbon Copy Cloner to a Firewire HD. It created a disk image on the firewire hd called Macintosh HD.sparseimage. Is it possible to boot from this image so I can clone it back to the main harddrive which is now running a different system?

Hmmm. i don't think you made a bootable clone--go back to CCC and check all the options again.

No, you can't boot from a disk image on a drive (you can with NetBoot/NetInstall and OS X Server, however).
You can clone the image to another drive and boot from it.

How do I clone the image to another drive and boot from it?

Also, in the Startup Disk preference pane there is an option to boot from a network drive. Does this mean I can boot from a computer on my home LAN?

Read the instructions that came with CCC. They do a good job explaining it.

Yes, if you have OS X Server and have configured NetBoot/NetInstall.
