Stop talking about how much Expose is cool or Finder improvements bla bla bla.. Let's talk about serious stuff: what doesn't work on 10.3. Eg, Toast bounce a few times then quits.. I think it would be useful make a list of apps which works and which doesn't

Yes it would. Camino doesn't seem to work. I really want to get Toast working. 10.3 has a built in ImageMounter so they do not include Disk Copy with the preview yet, but trying to use Disk Copy from 10.2 does not work So that leaves me without an option to burn cds in Panther. If anyone can figure out how to get Toast working(if that's possible unless they update the app) that would be great.
(Yes I know this is an Alpha preview and should not be used as my main system)

DiskCopy is now rolled into DiskUtility. Read up on other threads.
Camino works fine here. (v 0.7)

MSN Messenger is problematic here. The emoticons don't show, and when you send or receive a message, it doesn't show automatically, you have to scroll to the bottom of the message window.
Haven't had a chance to play with the big apps yet though.

The Microsoft Office 10.1.3 update won't run under Panther.
Alt-Tab is sketchy at best
If you have a 15" iMac, any account on your system from a jag-wire -> panther upgrade won't take advantage of the F9 Exposé functionality. If you create a new account, it works just fine. (Can any other 15"ers confirm this? Me and one other guy had the exact same issue)
Finder still hangs on ejecting some network drives. ugh.
There is some residue left after you single click on an icon on your desktop. I notice it more if its a multiline file name.
When I upgraded the iMac, it left a LOT of residue from jag-wire (mainly in the System Preferences). It worked fine on my iBook at home however.

Why is journaling enabled by default? Don't I remember hearing that causes a performance hit ~10-15%? Would it hurt to disable it? Anyone wanna try?

No, it wouldn't be useful at all.
This is a prerelease version of the operating system. I don't care if something works/doesn't work on this system. I care about the final released shipping version.
If something breaks now, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be broken in the final release.

The performance hit affects writing to disk ONLY. How often do you write to disk?
I haven't noticed anything slowing down in general.
Journaling isn't enabled by default though, it depends if you have enabled journaling before installing or you are formatting it when you install. If you are formatting when installing it will select journaling by default, but it's still an option even there.
Journaling is really helping harddrive integrity. No need to ever fsck again for intance.

this is what i have seen on a blue and white G3 and an original ibook:
APPLICATIONS:
recent builds of mozilla and camino do not work.
office 10.1.1 works fine.
mail 1.3 lets you edit (add/remove) the SMTP server list from within mail now.
mail 1.3 gives me "cant find spell checker" errors, though it appears to check spelling.
the mail thread mode is kinda nice.
pressing the edit button in the address book puts you into permanent edit mode (so you dont need to click edit a bunch of times if you are updating several entries.
cisco vpn client 4.0.0 works perfectly.
itunes 3 runs fine.
sherlock has the new itunes-y/safari bookmark-y format for listing channels. it also includes a whole mess of third party items
carracho runs fine.
OS:
postfix has replaced sendmail.
you can have multiple finder browsers.
the metal theme in the finder isnt that bad.
the foreground (non metal windows) title bar is actually a good thing.
yes, resizing windows in the finder is slow.
9.2.2 version of BIND/named.
clicking on an old file in the new save box does NOT place the filename in the save as field.
creating shortcuts in the new finder window (the left hand part) is a good thing and eliminates the baggage of all the directories that come before it. yes having stuff on the toolbar and to the left is redundant.
the command-tab application switcher is REALLY BIG.
the eject buttons next to mounted images/drives in the new finder windows are COOL.
SHARING:
finder FTP hangs for me indefinitely. people shouldnt be using FTP anyway. it is insecure. SFTP is the only way to go. and to make it even more painful there is no way to remove (disconnect) a ftp "volume".
panther cant see AFP shares from 10.2.x
panther cant see AFP shares from Windows 2000.
network (smb) browsing to windows 2000 machines doesnt seem to work consistently.
network (smb) browsing to solaris boxes running samba shares does not seem to work.
yes, disconnected smb shares still cause the finder to hang.

Christ, you people.
This is a DEVELOPER'S PREVIEW. It's for developers, not script kiddie weenies, to learn about the OS and have apps ready ON, BEFORE, or VERY SOON AFTER Panther is actually released. You are END USERS. The developers of the apps you're talking about are very aware that their apps don't work. How do I know that? Well, I'm at WWDC so you figure it out.
Here's a suggestion - take the Panther CDs, toss them in the trash. If you're not a developer, DON'T USE IT.
Mike
