I am assuming that filevault is just an elegant version of an encrypted disk image. Does anyone know if its accesible via remote login? If I logout at work and come home and ssh back in what sort of state is my home directory in!

Thanks - Michael

SInce your logged in you should be able to access your files. Ithink fileVault is at a low level [ain't sure coz I don't have the beast ]

I'll post later when I get back from work. I'll ssh from my Pismo to my Panther box over my home network and let you know how it goes.

Had it occurred to you that FileVault might not yet be implemented in this Developer Preview?

Moose, are you having a bad day or what? You may have a good point to keep in consideration, but I feel like you're trying to "Hanitize" us or something

If your test "works," you have discovered one of two things:

1) FileVault is in Panther, and works transparently for you regardless of login location.

2) FileVault is not yet in Panther.

A rather useless conslusion.

To see if its working can't you just creat a new user called say test, turn FileVault on for them (there is supposed to be a checkbox according to Jobs). Then log back out and into your usual account and then go and have a look at /Users/test. Then compare what you see to the same setup with FileVault unchecked for that user. I guess its possible it won't look any different with FV on or off but on the other hand it might :-)

Man, who peed in your corn flakes?

If you don't want to be in the same space as rabidly enthusiastic Mac "early adopters" then go elsewhere.

I guess that the best way to be sure FileVault is enabled would be to start in single user mode, find your way on the hard drive with terminal commands (like cd) and try reading a file (ideally a text file) that should be encrypted. If it is enabled, then you should not be able to see it's content.

Now, that really mean something because if someone can access your data in single user mode, it mean that it require no password and the data is either:
1. not encrypted
2. encrypted and the password can be found somewhere on the disk and it decrypt it on the fly (that would be quite useless security)

Well I found no such checkbox in the DP, so it's most likely not implemented right now. Unless I looked in the wrong place which is a possibility.

Well, there is no check box anywhere but the FileVault features here all seem to be present. It seems to be enabled by default as well.

If you have more than one user try to navigate another user's home directory. In Jaguar the folders would have little "Do Not Enter"-like signs on them and would display general info (ie- date created/modified etc). In Panther if you attempt to navigate another user's home directory there are no icons and all the info is "--". Seems to me like this could be part of the ecryption.

Jaguar on the left, Panther on the right

I logged out of my account and ssh'ed in from another system. I was able to move around and also was able to move files around etc...
