OK, this is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway. Just had a kernel panic (I was copying a 300 MB file from my desktop to the PB via AEBS). So, I've decided to repair permissions, etc. So -- can I boot up from ANY Jaguar CD or do I need to use the system CDs that came with my 12 in PB? I'm looking through the things that came with the PB and I see the software intall and restore CD and the Hardware Test CD (which I've never once looked at). I assume I need the "restore" CD.

You can repair permissions on the boot disk if you want, although some say that it isn't as effective. If you hold down command-s at startup you will boot into single user mode, ad then you could run fsck -y to check for disk errors. So you have options if you can't find a CD that will work.

I'm not totally sure, but I think any OS X installer disc will do (at least any 10.2 disc), so see if you have one of those. Otherwise, just try the restore CD. If your PB won't boot off a disc, it won't hurt anything, it just won't boot and give you an error message.

It's probably faster to just try booting off of a few than waiting for someone to answer you for sure.

I just tried the install/restore DVD/CD and it worked fine. Thanks for answering. I thought about the fsck route, but knew I'd actually have to go look up exactly what to type!

Interestingly, after I reparied permissions, I tried to verify the disk, and I got an error message, telling me the hard drive was in use. I thought if you were starting from the CD, you should be able to do that stuff. Most perplexing. But my permissions are repaired. I have no idea if that caused the panic (my 4th since getting the PB in Febuary) or not.

Thanks again. I'd still like to know if you can use any Jaguar CD, though.

Your 12" PowerBook is too new to be able to use a 10.2 CD. You'll need to use the CD that came with your Mac since it requires 10.2.x (whatever version it shipped with) to boot.
