Has anyone that hypothetically might use a copy of Panther noticed a difference in text rendering? I've checked the display settings and made sure they're the same as Jaguar, but the text rendering looks slightly different... I think better.

Yes, it's definitely different... smoother.

Mail uses different default fonts, too.

It looks plain hideous. Also some text seems to be "bolded" for no apparent reason, with really harsh outlines. Serious oddities with text rendering... and smooth scrolling is aweful. Hopefully that doesn't make it into the GM.... after all we finally have a nice fast browser, now they slow it down with poor scrolling speed (0.5 seconds to scroll a browser window "smoothly" is awful). but its only a dev build, dont read into it too much...

And the text in the Finder is more condensed.

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

The Lucida Grande font has been condensed throughout, its not just the finder its also in safari, mail, etc etc. It looks a LOT nicer on my powerbook 17", almost feels like I've had a screen upgrade!

Panther rocks, how can anyone not be in love with Apple at the minute?

I think the new font rendering (or maybe it is just different fonts?) are about 100x better than Jag. Everything looks so much crisper, I never really liked the blurry fonts in 10.2. Especially the menubar and Finder text are greatly improved.

Why should I? I can't afford a G5, Xcode isn't out yet and Panther will be $129 in a couple of months. All I got right now Safari 1 and an iChat beta.

Stink different.

All good things come to those who wait, and if panther is great now... wait until December it will be freakin awesome.

I don't mind paying Apple as long as they keep producing the goods and keeping us in computing nirvana. I know their hardware/software is expensive but we're paying for research and development, I believe Apple's investment into R&D is unparalleled in the industry (40% of profits is reinvested, I think).

Its all a matter of opinion, as everything is, but I'm happy with Apple at the moment, I wonder what's round the corner next?
