So earlier today, after discovering where fast user switching was enabled and giving it a try, I encountered a huge slowdown in performance.

I quit everything, nd went away for a few hours, only to come back and find my fan (powerbook), came on only after loading 3 pages in Safari. Wha?

Gotta be fast user switching, I say. Something's going on on the 'other side'.

I switch over, and sure enough, I'm greeted by the Flurry screensaver.

Wow.

Yea that happens too in XP when someone is logged in with the 'switch user' function in the background, it is almost unusable how it gets so slow.

Maybe it has something to do with I only have 256MB of DDR memory, but a 2 Ghz P4.

Open activity monitor and check out which user is slowing things down, you can quit the offending apps from there, the user will loose any unsaved work through.

Yeah, that's a helpful response, dude. It's never worked in the past and it isn't working now. Gah, drop it. Answer the man's question, sheesh.

direktor: Try running top -u in the Terminal and seeing which process is going on on the "other side" (look for its "PID"), then kill that process with kill processNumber.

I saw the same thing happen. At the time I had most of the main apple apps running, plus I had installed some menu bar apps (like a CPU monitor).

I attributed it to a memory leak or something with one of the apps that was running.

I had two users logged in and only the one with all the apps open was acting sluggish. When I logged out of that User and relogged in everything was fine.

Given that 10.3 is an unfinished product, it is safe to assume some apps will cause some problems. Plus there are likely to still be a lot of issues with the OS given that this is a developer preview.

Surprisingly most do work (photoshop, illustrator, office etc).

Has anyone else noticed that Disk Copy is missing?

I guess the question is "Does 10.3 freeze apps for the other users when switched away?"

If the screen saver kicked in, and the other user experienced a major slow down, I guess the answer is "no".

It should be a selectable option.

Imagine rendering something for iDVD, letting your wife/kids switch, check their email, etc. then switch back to your account not having lost that time rendering? Neat huh?

I wasn't asking for help really, since I found the cause of the slowdown. I wasn't even asking a question.

I posted just because I thought it was funny bug that is surely already on their list to fix.

I had not, but this may be because disk images are mounted in the finder in Panther, you don't have to watch another application open. But I wonder what that means for creating new disk images...?

I had never even thought about the screen saver coming on for the background user, I'll guess I'll just turn the timer off and use hot corners. At least now I know, thanks.

Disk Copy's feature's have been integrated into the Finder (mounting/verifying images) and Disk Utility.

I really think Apple will maks Screen Effects intelligent enough to not activate when another user is currently using the machine.

Actually, I was quite impressed that the screen saver actually ran in the background !!
