I have a FW drive with my own copy of OS X on it which I often boot from. My iMac of course has its own version. If I install 10.3 on th FW drive, will it update the iMac's firmware and whatnot so that 10.2 will no longer boot there independently?

Wow. I didn't expect this from a Moderator.
Do not install Panther on a machine you need to do work on. Apple tells you this, and they do it for a reason.

?
It's not, it's on a drive I can toss in the trash if I want. And -- as per the question -- I'm not going to install it at all if it alters the computer's onboard software (firmware).
So, do you know the answer?
Thanks

Perhaps you missed the top thread. Here. Allow me to quote its title:
"Panther support threads WILL BE LOCKED"
And, since you obviously have no interest in reading that thread itself, I will post its contents here.
Any threads relating to Panther support, whether it be about where to obtain it, or how to get it to install, or burning the images, will be locked.
This is a developer preview from Apple. If there are support issues, developers should contact Apple, or seek help through the ADC.
Discussion of Panther and it's features is acceptable, but support can not be given.
If it is a machine that you cannot be without for any reason whatsoever, DO NOT INSTALL PANTHER. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

I just missed that thread. No need to get angry. I'll let the thread sink.
But for the record, "external FireWire hard drive with its own system" and "computer I cannot be without for any reason whatsoever" are two totally different things.

For the record, they're not. Mac OS System Software can molest hardware in all sorts of dangerous ways. Hidden bugs can do all sorts of nasty things.

It will work perfectly fine, I'm doing the exact same thing on my ibook. 10.2.6 on the book, 10.3 DP1 on an external drive for testing purposes.
