I have a complete boot-able copy of my HD (OSX, docs everything etc) on an external firewire drive created with carbon copy cloner. If I swap startup discs from the system prefs panel it works fine but how can I choose it when booting? I am thinking of a scenario when i find my regular internal disk has a problem and I want to choose the firewire disc after the start up "bong". I thought that there was a way of using the apple and alt or apple and ctrl keys but nothing seems to work. What am I missing?

Hold Option to bring up the Startup Manager which will allow you to choose which volume or network image to boot from.

Or....

Shift-Ctrl-Option-Delete will boot the first device AFTER the default boot device. That way you don't have to wait for that device screen to come up, put you on hold, etc.
