My iBook (500MHz/combodrive/10.2.6) all of a sudden doesn't see blank discs anymore.

I tried two different (decent) brands, no icon appears on the desktop, I get this dialog: "You've placed a disc that contains volumes that can't be read by OS X...(etc.)" (translation)
Written cd-r's read just fine, both audio and data.

This might be so after going from 10.2.4 to .6. Another funny phenomenon I thought I'd left behind with OS 9: when logging in etc, the HD icon has moved to another position on my desktop... not time for a clean reinstall yet I hope ???
