Check out the QuickTime State-of-the-Union at 1:04:06 and 1:09:28.

Panther supports colour management built into the OS, independent of the apps, with QuickTime support of multichannel audio. (We've got the ports now too finally.)

Now what about the DVD Player?

It supports surround as well!

(it would be quite strange if it didn't )

the ports too?

other than the m-audio revoution, i dont think that there are any anlog set ups that will support multi channel audio (5.1 and up). if youre refering to the optical out, then i was under the impression that it could only send out compressed signals (ie DD, DTS) and stereo.

most users would only benefit from the anlog multi channel outs (like PCs have had for years). the optical out requires a reciever and something to encode the audio in a compressible format that supports multi channel audio.

when i switched last year to my Dual 867, it was the lack of surround sound options that really bugged me, as windows did it extremely well. Im glad were catching up

(though for some reason my install of jag is freaking out, and cant see those videos)

Yeah sorry, I was talking multichannel compressed audio for the ports. But come to think of it, they'd be irrelevant in terms of the OS's multichannel support, since we'd need a real-time DD encoder or something built-in to hear anything from those ports. You're right - momentary stroke on my part. Earth to Eug:

I'd benefit from a coaxial digital audio output though (from DVDs) since my computer speaker system will do DD5.1 via that, but unfortunately it does not take an optical input. I do have an extra DD receiver unused, but no speakers for it. Time to buy some speakers...

By including Optical-Out, Apple has just created a new market for cheep breakoutbox/recievers.

A small box that takes the multichannel optical and converts it into analogue, suitable for use with a cheap 5.1/7.2 computer sound system.

All it takes is someone savvy enough to get the thing to market, and I am sure their is a company out there somewhere thinking about that exact same thing.
