Hi

Can anyone using the developer's preview version of Panther verify the presence of USB 2.0 Drivers.
With the new G5s having built-in USB 2.0 ports, does this mean that forthcoming versions of the Mac OS (i.e. 10.2.7 & 10.3) will support true USB 2.0 transfer rates.
The upshot of this being that, for those of us not able get our hands on a brand new G5 machine just yet, we might be able to put an inexpensive generic USB 2.0 PCI card into our older machines, without having to worry about third party USB 2.0 drivers for Mac OS X, to be able to to access & realize the full potential of the growing range of USB 2.0 peripherals.

I'm sure there are drivers -- for whatever USB 2.0 chipset the machines use.

Uh, isn't it known that the chipset in the current/former windtunnel macs is actually a USB 2.0 chip? If so, is the same chip used on the G5? If so, then MDD users will have USB 2.0 when they upgrade to Panther, right?

The fundamental USB 2.0 drivers are present in, if I recall correctly, 10.1 and later. That's why USB 2 cards can work on OS X, while on OS 9, they are forced to drop down to USB 1.1 speeds.

So I do not expect that the MDD Macs will suddenly gain USB 2 ability, as it seems that Apple probably disabled the USB 2 High-Speed mode intentionally.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understood it, USB 2 cards still required 3rd Party drivers in Jaguar (such as those provided by Orange Micro with their USB 2 Cards) to function at USB 2 speeds.
The questions then is will Panther support USB 2 cards natively without the need for 3rd Party Drivers?

Fair bit of discussion about this topic in this thread but no one seems to really be able to confirm whether full USB 2 support is present in OS X.
