Hi all,

I have a friend with an inherited office imac circa 1998 with OS X on it.

She is locked out password wise. Is there any way, such as booting from an OS 9 CD or external firewire drive to go in and delete the existing user accounts, then boot the internal drive and setup a new user account with administrative priveledges?

Or am I better off just booting from an OS 9 or X CD, wiping the disk and performing a clean install?

There is software on it currently that she would like to be able to use...

If you boot to an OS X install CD, there is an option either in the Apple menu or the App menu that says "Reset Password." I've never needed this but you might as well try it.

If that doesn't work, yes you can wipe the system.
