It seems the Linux version of pdisk has the ' t ' command to change a partitionīs type, but when using pdisk from my OSX box, it doesnīt have that command.
So, how can I change a partitionīs type and label under OSX ?

Can't you change the label the same way you'd rename a file?
And by partition type, do you mean the way the is formatted? If so, you can format partitions with disk utility. Forigve me if I'm wrong here, I've only used pdisk on Linux once (and that's all I ever want to see of it) and I've never used with OS X.

Donīt confuse the partition label with the volume name. The partition label is stored in the partition table of the device, whilst the volume name is stored in a data structure inside the volume, according to the file system it has been formatted with.
The partition type is another information which is stored inside the partition table as well, and does not determine what the file system is present in the volume (it only gives a hint, which can be used by the automounter daemon)

try the netbsd version of pdisk. works on osx and has the "t" option. i spent a frantic 3 days looking for a version of pdisk with that option after a linux install changed the name of the partition map partition w/o asking...! osx then politely ignored the disk at all levels - Disk Utility didn't even list it.
"netbsd-pdisk.macos-10-2" is its full name. you should be able to find it at netbsd.org.
good luck, phil
