Hi,

I don't know much about the terminal, but I need help with lpr printing.

On OS9 I can easily print via LPR but on OSX I can't

I found out the problem. OS 9 prints via one of the respected rfc outgoing ports 721-731 see link

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1179.html

OSX, however, prints by default using port 995 and higher. I checked this in my firewall logs.

Is there a way to force OSX to print to an IP printer using one of the respected outgoing ports? Or am I way off on this assumption.

Also If I could print to port 9100 easily that might help too.

IF you can help, I need help since I'm a complete terminal novice.

A lot different from printing via appleshare or using the desktop printer utility...ugh

I'm not sitting in front of my Mac right now (at work, win2k, ugh), but have you tried adding the printer through the CUPS admin page? Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:631/. This should load up your CUPS admin page, and you can add printers from there. It's really quite a flexible tool, and might answer your question.

Cups is cool, but I can't seem to make a configuration to work. The print server works because I can print fine from os9 macs and I can print from OSX when in a classic application, I think because my outgoing port number is correct.

But when I print using the print center or cups printer in a native app I just keep getting timed out!

Has anyone been able to print via lpr to an hp 4xxxN printer in OS X natively? I don't have appletalk access as I'm behind a firewall.

I've tried the latest drivers from HP, <no good>, I've tried fixing my file permissions<no good> and I've tried different configs in the print center/cups <no good>

I was however able to telnet to port 9100 on the printer and then print out any words I typed in the telnet session, still..not to useful for when I need to print a file or web page out.

I've spoken with some other users and they've given up printing via IP to HP printers, but there has to be a way to do this....
