Is there a way to change the way the Function Keys work on my Powerbook? Currently F1 - F7 perform a task (change volume, change brightness etc...) instead of acting as the actual F1 - F7 keys normally. So you have to hold down Fn in order to get them to just be the F1 - F7 buttons. This is a pain for applications that use those buttons (like Warcraft 3, for example =) Is there a way to reverse that so that the Fn button will do the task (and vice versa)?

Thanks,

Geoff

Look for uControl in MacUpdate.com - it has a function doing exactly that.

But last time I tried it gave some inconsistent behavior. Please let others know how far you fare.

This was a function in OS 9's keyboard control panel. I've heard that if you boot into OS 9 and reverse it, that the setting will stick in OSX as well.

Thus, it follows that it's some kind of hardware setting (must be in the PRAM) - but there's currently no OS X utility that will set it correctly.

I wish the functionality was present in OS X, since I'm not about to go install OS 9 just to get my f-keys back.

Sweet! I booted into OS 9, changed the settings, and now the function keys in OS X are swapped. Thanks!

No problem. I wish I could do the same..

It seems kind of ridiculous that nobody has figured this out yet. Oh well.
