I guess I'll need to reinstall the OS, but in case someone here has any ideas for help, and for future reference, here's a problem that hit my 10.2.6 yesterday.
Eerily, this occurred while checking out StrongBad... didn't his computer just die?
Step by step:
1: I installed the Windowshade 3 Preview (yes, at my own risk etc. but it has minimize-in-place!)
2: Logout/Login
3: Launch Safari, head for StrongBad
4: Animation plays, but no sound.
5: Attempting to adjust sound with keyboard keys looks visually normal, but no sound can be heard.
6: Attempting to adjust sound from the Prefpane, same thing - no sound feedback. However, clicking on an alert sound option plays back the sound.
7: Finder crashes
8: iTunes works ok - sound plays. Quit Safari, relaunch.
9: Attempting to view Flash in any browser fails, plug-in causes a shared library error related to 'CFMPriv_CarbonSound'
10: Acrobat Reader (app and plugin) also refuses to launch, same error.
So, the library file or files somehow got corrupted? If you have any ideas of which files to replace from an other mac, I'd love to hear them. I think it might just work.
Thanks,
J

Whoohoo, partial success. Flash plays again, without sound though and Carbon apps seem to launch fine. No volume control audio feedback, either, so Carbon sound is still broken.
For the record, for some future searcher, I'll record any progress here.
I downloaded the 10.2.6 combo updater, opened the package and uncompressed the actual files from the archive within.
Within Frameworks, I found an item titled 'CarbonSound'.
As root, I replaced the matching file in my system with the new one. Didn't compare them for differences, should have. Versions were the same.
Restart, and some progress indeed.
Tomorrow I'll hunt down the remainder of the related files from an identical system and see if I can get it workin 100%
Kinda fun as a challenge, reminds me of my days of small scale system administration back in the 7.0 - 8.0 days. If it breaks, no prob, I can always reinstall.
edit: next day
Well, it was simple enough. The console told me the System:Library:Components:SoundManagersomethingsom ething folder had a file with trouble, so I copied that folder from another G4.
