One new feature in the dock is that the "Hide" command is now an option if you click & hold on the dock icon for any running application.

It may not be the killer feature, but i always wanted that option in the dock menu.

The reason to by 10.3 will not be a single feature, but the sum of all those little features and nice additions.

And a hide option in the dock menu is certainly a reason more for me to by panther.

Doesn't work with apps in the background though.

Click & hold is a time-wasting. Try right-click or hold ctrl-click.

Yes it does. Cmd-Tab to the app but don't release the Cmd key. While still holding the Cmd key hit H and it will hide the app (same goes for Q to quit).

Some applications do not have the keyboard option for hide others (cmd-option-h)... Any idea why?

Has it got something to do with the apps being written carbon or cocoa?

This a case where Carbon applications got a feature "for free" while it has to be explicitly set in Cocoa applications (it's more often the other way around).

it would be awesome if you could right click on minimized items in the dock, and close them. now, if they are in the dock, you cant right click on them and get a contextual menu to close...so you have to open it and close.

Some apps, including many by Adobe, already have Command-H already belonging to another command.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.

Yeah, I've had it since I installed Transparent Dock back in 10.1. Using the right button on my Kensington mouse, I can hide my pr0n super quick.

You know, of course, that you can set each Adobe app to use command-H for hiding the app, and an alternate (control-command-H) to hide visual aids.

Adobe application > Preferences, General > Use System Shortcut Keys.

Command-H is reserved by Apple is OS X. No responsible app should use it w/o providing an alternative.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was trying to add it myself.

One of the first things I do when setting up a new system is hacking the Dock to my liking. Adding Hide to running apps, Quit to the Finder Dock menu, Pinning Dock sub-menu, Dock shadow, transparent hidden app Dock icons.
I do all this by hand, though. Yeah I know there are apps that can do it for me, but I'm a hands-on kind of guy. I like to know how stuff works.

Same here. It's not there in the "out of the box" Jaguar, but it's easily enabled with a utility.

You can do this now in Jaguar with the MIP dock installed, the feature you mentioned is built-in to that version of dock.
