Since I trashed my entire User/Library/Preferences folder, which completely solved my horrendous System-wide freezes, IE and System Preferences settings won't stick and constantly reset...
I don't ever want to go to MSN home again! Please help...
Also, though not related to the above, Safari has just started crashing all the time... Any ideas?

did you trash the folder, or just its contents?
Anyway, Explorer has a sub-folder in prefs with 7 items in it. Did it regenerate itself? If not, you might need to re-install it.

If you threw away the actual folder itself, and not just it's contents... you shouldn't have. But I'm assuming the folder regenerated almost immediately. What you should do (not directly related to the throwing out prefs problem) is clear your caches and repair permissions (get a utility like Cocktail, it'll do it in one swoop), this may help your application crashes.

Yes, I just threw away its contents...
An explorer install is just a drag and drop anyway, that's what's odd...

I did all this. and again...
IE is now remembering everything but Safari, despite me have trashed all of its pref's, syill crashes all the time.
Attempting to download, for example, causes it to Quit, every time...

Fixed it!
From MacFixit...
Troubleshooting Safari 1.0 (#11): Trashing QuickTime Preference can allow proper operation
While this workaround seems strange at first, it has worked well for a number of readers who previously had serious problems with Safari 1.0 unexpectedly quitting and displaying a host of other problems.
Try deleting the file: com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist which is found your Home/Library/Preferences folder, and then re-launching Safari. Apparently this entity, like other Mac OS X preference files, can become corrupt and cause problems with Safari as well as other browsers.
This fix has also been able to cure problems adding bookmarks in Safari, and incomplete downloads.
Feedback?
It worked for me... and I'd just finished getting all my bookmarks in Camino which, btw, just keeps getting better and better...
