There's an option in System Prefs > International > Input menu > Options to 'Use Apple-Option-Space to rotate the input method. It doesn't seem to work. Which means whenever I try to magnify in Illustrator (or other Adobe apps), which is Apple-Space, the input menu rotates instead of magnifying.

Is there a way out of the quagmire?

Not sure if this will work, but try hitting space before the other keys. It shouldn't rotate the input method that way.
