a few weeks ago there was a bunch of speculation about a new device/software/service called Pal.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...;highlight=Pal

speculation ranged from a wireless tablet like device to being able to log in to your home folder over the internet. both of which would be really cool.

so is this... http://www.mac.com/1/iTour/tour_bookmarks.html what we were all getting so excited about?

by the way, i'm really bummed that Pather won't let me sync my home directory to my iPod and then be able to "log in" to my iPod from any OS X mac, bringing all my files, prefs, desktop, etc. with me.

that might help sell a lot of macs. with all these windows people running around with iPods. they'd see a friend do what i described and be like, "my iPod doesn't do that". "sure it does, but your computer doesn't."

Why won't Panther allow this?

Because the iPod is not meant for heavy disk use.

I think what he meant was that there's no retardedly simple interface to make this happen.

ditto /Users/username/ /Volumes/ipodname/

ditto also works to get songs off your iPod.

ditto /Volumes/ipodname/iPod_Control/Music /directory where you want it to go/

Song names are not "neatly organized" in the human sense, but iTunes should reorganize them for you, if you want.

You shouldn't use your iPod to boot OS X, because Virtual Memory uses the disk heavily, and there is no (easy) way to turn it off. (Not that you'd want to, anyway). Nor would you want to edit video on it. But I see no reason why it couldn't be used to store documents and preferences. Is that considered "heavy use"?

I'm on the fence about buying Panther. A feature like this might tip the scales for me...

O.k., maybe I just don't understand. I sync'd my bookmarks, but how do I use this feature? I don't have anything to click on to get to the bookmarks. How does it get activated on the browser? Thanks in advance for responses to what I am sure is a truly basic and simple question.

go to www.mac.com (or go to apple.com and click on the .Mac tab).

in the left hand sidebar click on Bookmarks. you should get a little pop-up window with all your bookmarks.

to me the interface is a little confusing, especially if you have a lot of folders in your bookmark bar and/or menu.
