My Dock disappears as if I were shutting down and then two seconds later reappears as if starting up. I am running 10.2.6 on a Powerbook G$ with 1024 MB Ram. This just started today and happens every 15 minutes or so. It just happened as I was typing. The dock is on the right side and disappears starting from the bottom. It reappears in the normal fashion.

You could delete the file com.apple.dock.plist in your home Library/Preferences folder. You will need to reset your preferences for the Dock, but that may do the trick.

try deleting this file as well

/Users/[user]/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache

i had the same problem with my dock once and deleting this file fixed it. in os x cache files can be just as suspect as plist/preference files

Do the above, and also consider running the permissions utility.

I know this is going to sound wierd but...

Did you mess around with your backgroup settings? I saw this happen on my Mother's iMac and what it was was that she had selected a iPhoto folder as her background to change every X minutes. The dock just kept dieing (disappearing) and rebooting (reappearing).

Mess around in there and see.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I did them all. I believe BZ may have found the solution, and I would never have suspected this. I had been reading a book on iPhoto and inadvertently did set the background to change every 5 minutes. I thought I had unselected this option but when I checked, that was exactly it.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I would have spent a day reformatting the hard drive without your help.

Case closed.
