i have two admins on my iMac. I (user A) drop a folder in the other (user B's) drop box

when i log in as B the file is still owned by A. Because B is an admin I can change it to being owned by A.

However, if the item is a folder I hit the button to change all permissions and it doesn't work. The permissions in all sub files do not change.

Why is this?

How can I recursively go thru all the files and folders in a directory and change the ownership on the terminal?

Ok I figured out how to fix it using the terminal.

I know a little unix so i did

man chown to see how it works.

i then typed

chown -R user_name:staff iTunes\ Music

that changed all my files over. I still don't see why the button in get info doesn't do this for me though.

I had to be the super user on the terminal to do it.

I don't know if the Finder's get info works the same way as the chown command, but ONLY the owner of a file and the super-user can change the ownership of a file using chown. So this probably applies to your case (I noticed you had to do it as super-user).

When a file is copied, it is owned by the person who did the copying (ie, the person who created the new file). There are unix work arounds for this, but not in the Finder, that I know of.

The button in the Finder, plain and simply, is broken. It only works if you are actually logged in as root.
