Presumably the reason that Apple provides the option to Archive and Install is to facilitate switching back quickly. So, my question is, how can that be done? I could just copy all the directories back to where they were, but that doesn't seem right somehow. What do you do about things like changed disk drivers, etc? And does moving the directories from the Previous System folder really get everything? I have never seen any options in the installer that sounded like an Unarchive uninstall.

If it does have to be done manually, it doesn't seem like a very user-friendly way to go about it.

OK, well I have read almost all of the documents here:

http://search.info.apple.com/?search...hive%20install

and it looks like I am just going to have to do another Archive and Install with my 10.2 disks (so as to preserve users and network stuff) and piecemeal update stuff from my previous system folder (I will have two, now). It seems like Apple Software Restore should be updated to restore from a previous system folder, not just restore disks.

I would be happy to find out that I am wrong, by the way.

No, the archive and install is used for users of previous systems that don't want to erase their drive and start all over again.

That makes sense in a twisted sort of way. I still wish that Apple had created a way to restore from that system. Oh, well, with the Archive and Install option it really doesn't take that long to recover, I just wish I didn't have to reinstall all of my unix stuff like MySQL, etc, since /usr was (re)moved.

I know Panther is supposed to have some sort of Recover operation, but I'm not exactly sure how it works.
