Can someone tell me why, since v.10.2.1 - 10.2.6 I have not been able to burn CDs in the maximum setting? I am only allowed to burn at 6x. The 8x won't even work... is it my CDs? I'm using Imation 700MB/80MIN 48X CD-Rs. What's up?

I've had a similar problem recently, although I figured it was the crappy cheap CDs I bought, that said I have two brands that I'm using recently, neither will take the maximum burn speed (a whopping 8x) and I manage to burn at 16x using them on my friends Powerbook.

What model of CD-RW drive do you have?

Mine is MATSHITA CW-7586.
If it rained soup I'd have a fork in my hand!

My drive is a Pioneer > DVD-RW DVR-103
It could definitely be the CD-Rs - I've used Verbatim flawlessly, but Imation dropped their prices so much I bought by their reputation... maybe it's time I go back to Verbatims???

Probably not a bad idea to go back to your original brand.

OS X seems to be rather sensitive to the media used for a burn. I've had intermittent luck with getting a maximum burn from the drive in my iBook (which seems to be a pretty consistent problem amongst iBook owners) and Apple's response has been that the drive/software automatically decide based on an examination of the media what the maximum burn rate will be. It's supposedly based upon the 'flaws' the drive/software find and has nothing to do with what speed the disc is rated to be burned.

And it really doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what the max burn rate will be using the same media burn after burn in my iBook.

I only get 1x burn with dvds in a Pioneer 103 superdrive, even if they are 2x speed or higher- apart from with Apple media, which burn at 2x all the time. I presume its doig the same check. Sorry, this isn't much help.. but thought it wise to say 'me too'
