I am finding a lot of swf movies that will not play when download to disk. I'm using Safari 1.0 (v85)
unless saved with the html source file stuck in a folder with the right hierarchy and played within a browser.
When opening the swf's url in quicktime, all I get is a dialoge saying 'no data' and double clicking on the downloaded swf file cause's
quicktime to balk at the file the same way.
Cannot even export as self-contained movie because qt will not open them up.
What's this all about and is there a way around it ?

If the swf needs the Flash 6 player, you cannot open it with Quicktime. Quicktime 6 includes only a Flash 5 codec.
You can open the Movie with the Flash StandAlone Player (SAFlashPlayer) which should be downloadable from Macromedia, since I know it is also included in the Flash MX Trial and it doesn't expire, so it must be free.

Sorry Tsilou B, I was trying to explain that the swf files play in the browser OK. Just cannot save them to disk - without the accompanying html file and opened only within a browser. when saved to disk, quicktime or the flash player cannot open then - the swf file is/has been fully downloaded ( many kb/mb in size not the default 4k file). but is unplayable.
Some quicktime movies fully download to the browser but cannot be saved to disk either.
If anyone knows how to save either a .swf or .mov file when the 'save as quicktime movie ' option is greyed out - please teach me your wise ways!

Its quite common to put the main swf inside a dummy file, (which calls another file in from the interent) to stop people downloading your work and claimimg it as there own. Its bad if ou just want to watch a bit of animation, but ultimately its a good thing. There are a few apps for the pc that gets round this, but I dont think there are any on the mac.

A file that is not streamed but downloaded and plays fully in the browser must be 'cached' somewhere ?
Is there a way to save those pesky megabites!

When the download is complete, just go into /tmp/501/Temporary Items and grab the "QTPluginTempXXXXXXX" file. Rename it to "somemovie.mov" and you're all set.

Qdos (Kudos) on the tmp/501/ trick !
Still no worky !
I'm getting a lotta' WebKitPlugInStreams files around 20, all about 20kb in size and the one large movie file in the tmp directory - dragging this file to the desktop and renaming it .swf/.mov still causes Quicktime to tell me 'invalid media data' was found in the movie, and I cannot use 'save as' or export it.
