At my university we use pcounter to limit how many pages can a student print during a semester, and if they use their quota then they have to pay an additional fee. Pcounter interacts with Novell so we have no problems with user managment. Now we have a lot of Mac's as well, however I was not able to find a software that would do the same thing. I know I can assing quotas if I had them authenticating to an OS X server, but that is not an option here unless I can have that server somehow autenthicate to Novell. It became so serious that they were thinking about removing Mac's from all the labs on campus, unless I find a solution. So did anyone ever had a problem like this and solved, or is there a way to authenticate OS X server to Novell. I'd appreciate any help.

FWIW, my experiences:

My law school used pcounter to regulate printing charges etc. Pcounter didn't work while they had appletalk printing turned on, so they turned that off (lest mac users print too many things for free). Without Appletalk, I was forced to do the whole hack to turn on SMB printing in 10.2 which worked until 10.2.4 or 10.2.5 came out (at which point it was broken). Anyway, that set up forced one to authenticate to the printer (just as one would authenticate to an SMB share) and so printing was correctly tracked.

i can't be sure, but my guess/hope is this will work with Panther once that comes out as well.
